Metareview: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)

Don't be glum, PlayStation 3 owners! Sure, your console of choice can't play Super Mario Galaxy, but it's going to be receiving DivX support in the hopefully near future. Oh, wait, you bought it to play games? Well, that's been a problem for a while, but it seems that Naughty Dog's latest offering, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, might be the perfect cure for what ails you.

Part Tomb Raider, part Gears of War, and all pretty, this game certainly looks great, but what about the entire package? Are we witnessing the birth of the next great video game series? The Metareview contains these answers, and more.

IGN (91/100): "Here's the thing about Uncharted, the final sum is far greater than the individual parts. Maybe you don't dig the combat or maybe the pop-in gets you down, but the overall package of an endearing story, outstanding score, great performances and fun gameplay should put this title on the top of your holiday wishlist. Say what you will about the PS3, but Uncharted isn't just a standout for Sony -- it's a standout for gaming as a whole."
Eurogamer (90/100): "By focusing on keeping things fun at all times, it might not be considered the most expansive or ambitious game out there. It doesn't have a free-form openworld, but this is proof - if it were needed - that making a linear action game is nothing to be sneered at. By starting with a great control and camera system, building on that with excellent combat and a wonderful spin on Ico's platform adventuring, and then topping it off with a decent storyline, Naughty Dog has cooked up one of the most relentlessly entertaining, fat-free games to emerge in ages. Topped off with the most stunning use of the PS3's underused technical prowess yet, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is, for my money, the first must-have PlayStation 3 title."

Another kick ass game for PS3. This will join Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm, COD4, Assasins Creed, VF5 and several other PS3 games in my collection.

for a long time i've been battling fanbois on here, felt i was the only one defending the ps3 at times. people did have valid reasons to bitch, but i kept telling people to just wait it out it'll turn around. and now look what's happening...i'm loving this shiz. i will have this game the first day, go playstation!

IGN scores as fair as any other site and is not biased against PS3. They gave Uncharted a higher score than any other gaming site so far with a 91.

Uncharted has a solid 87 going on metacritic right now which may fall down to 84 or so once the more critical smaller sites review it.

Not too shabby. Not like, 360 good, but not too shabby either.

darth balls - its nice to see a good title for the PS3 library, but you are a bit dramatic. The ps3 has a long way to go before their library is impressive. I don't doubt that it will happen, but to act like they are suddenly the ubber console for 1 title is a bit presumptive.

Frank, you don't have to defend your purchase every god damn time you post. It makes you look insecure.

Uncharted is a great game, no doubt, but (and I hate to be a dick here)looking at the MetaCritic score, it's not as good as the 360's top titles, or more recently, Mass Effect. That score can definitely go up though, and Mass Effect's down, so it remains to be seen. What's really cool about this game though, is that it's not a first person shooter, or a over the shoulder third person shooter. I think that's really refreshing and this game's biggest pull, at least for me. Definitely a buy when I get a PS3.

And where are the 7 and 8 scores?

What do you care? You've got Galaxy, go play it since you believe it's bigger than the second coming of Jesus.

It hasn't got any 7 or 8 scores. To date, the lowest is 8.5 (EGM and 1UP).

But don't let reality get in your way, Fernando. You know in your heart that Uncharted sucks - it is, after all, a PS3 game.

Why must you be so critical on PS3 games? Uncharted is a great game, and yet you still try to find holes to poke through. Are you so insecure about the PS3 being a good console that you need to bash-it whenever possible? If you have nothing to say that contributes or provides meaningful input to the discussion, DON'T SAY IT!!!

As for your question, I haven't seen any scores lower than 85 on metacritic.

That came out on 360 too, I demand an apology for the MS fanboys. ;p

lol there are so many haters on this site! people are just mad that their 2 knocks against the PS3 are slowly fading away.

1) It's too expensive.
-prices are starting to become semi-reasonable. $399 for a PS3 is not that bad for all your getting. unless you are super into BC then it's a great deal.

2) It has no games.
-Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank Future, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore were all pretty damn good exclusive games plus we have Haze, Unreal Tournament 3, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Online, FFXIII, FF versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, L.A. Noire, etc. etc. on the horizon, plus Playstation Home. so if you havent jumped on the PS3 bandwagon yet it's about time to.....wait for it.....wait for it.....Jump In.

I'm sure the fair & balanced crew at GameSpot will give it a nice big 6.5. Well I mean let's be fair, it's not on the 360 so how can it even be taken seriously!?

But, since Fernando mentioned Assassin's Creed, I thought I'd tell everyone who's not bought it and is uncertain due to lowish review scores to check out Penny Arcade's news today.

Gabe basically says the low scores are due to people not watching til after the credits, (like I've done with movies since the second Matrix movie) or the reviewers needing to meet a deadline.

Fernando, it's getting ridiculous now. You're only making yourself look bad. The fact is, there are good games on the ps3. You'd only be ignorant to say differently.

Wait till they show japans consoles sales for the week, Fernando might jump from a bridge since PS3 outsold wii almost 2-1...

Great to see the guys at Naughty Dog are still capable of creating great franchises (Crash Bandicoot for PS1, and Jak and Daxter for the PS2). I can definitely see a bright future for this game (although I would still like to see Jak and Daxter brought to the PS3).

Yeah I'm guessing Naughty Dog will make this into the next great trilogy. When you see this and realize that the entire trilogy is most likely going to be exclusive to the PS3, fanboys must be orgasming.

That screenshot intrigues me, maybe I'll get a chance toplay this in the future.

fantastic. PS3 is finally coming into its own slowly but surely. most of these recent "BIG" games are finally living up to the hype (unlike the first batch *cough* Lair *cough*). i tell you what though, i am definately having more fun with my PS3 now than any of my other consoles (also have Wii, DS, and PSP. and i havent bought Galaxy yet so that could compete lol). either way, it's a great time to be a gamer. im like the happiest poor person on the planet right now lol.

ive played the demo, and im gonna have to say that this game is somewhat a dissapointment, mainly for me it was the horrible camera, im sorry but whenever you have to manually move the camera to see what you should be seeing constantly, its not good.

besides that the game was enjoyable and had its highmarks(graphics are sexy!) but if i had to rate the game it would be more around 75ish, not bad but not the greatest thing on earth

I don't understand how the camera can be horrible if its under your own control. If your having problems with a camera then isn't it your own fault?

Personally I would hate to have a camera that was locked in this game and not be able to look around.

Imagine taping a camera to your back. Yes I know it's really hard to tape a camera to your back but do it. Good. Now imagine you can only see through that camera. No you're not allowed to have an apparutus to hold the camera a fixed distance to your back, or have a flying glasses wearing turtle on a cloud be your cameraman.

You got the camera taped on your back. You can move it however you want but it's taped on your back. I don't care if it can't look in the right direction or you have to retape it every second in a fight leaving you vulnerable. It stays taped. TO YOUR BACK.

Just because a camera's under your control doesn't mean it can't be terrible (just look at any 3D Sonic game).

I'm not familiar with the 3d sonic games. His complaint was "im sorry but whenever you have to manually move the camera to see what you should be seeing constantly, its not good."

So the camera should automatically be shifting focus to things as the game progresses? Seems like a stupid complaint.

The camera was more than functional for me. In fact, I used it often as anyone can tell you who played the demo, enemies are not always coming from the same spot and the ability to easily change to where they are coming from is a HUGE plus. And besides, it's about an average camera for a third person game. Not the best but certainly not the worst.

Right, my earlier post is a little confusing. Just imagine holding a camera while playing. As you're running, gunning, and surviving. With a terrible auto-focus and auto-zoom and slow working manual settings.

maybe i should clarify what i posted, i wasnt saying that the game should put the camera in a fixed position, im just saying that where its needed it should adjust itself, in this case the camera is not the worst but i felt when i was in the gun fights(which get intense) that it was way too hard to control the camera, my aim and then look around for the next spot to jump (the enemies love to lob grenades).

and although my post may not make sense to all, this is naughty dog, naturally i hold them to a higher standard. I mean comeon they made the Bandicoot and Jak and i feel like that this game is not up to their usual quality, but its not horrible, they are trying something new. Who knows, maybe the full game isnt the same as the demo, ill reserve my final judgements till then but as of right now my initial impression was 75ish and it sticks there.

This is slightly out of date; the game has recieved two 8.5 ratings (EGM and 1up) since this was written.

And I'm a little surprised to see you still pulling off the 'PS3 haz no games' thing: even without Uncharted, there's still a decent line up of games out now. Enough to keep me busy, at any rate. ^_^

At any rate, this'll probably be a first day buy for me.

No, I didn't. Although now I look, I see metacritic gives the exact same excerpt for both of them.

Huh. Why does metacritic count the review twice then? It's dragging down Uncharted's average score...
